Update: Uniden HP-1 Home Patrol Digital Scanner Firmware Update!

For those of you with the Uniden HP-1 Home Patrol Digital Scanner, Uniden has updated firmware to firmware version 1.03.01.  This is from the Uniden Blog

Nothing major, here, but for the curious, here is the list of things we fixed:
  • In our original release, we included options for default actions when you power off your HomePatrol-1 (Clock Standby, Weather Standby, All Off). However, the hook to connect this to the actual power-off routine never got connected, so you've been having to tap the screen, then tap again to select your power-off option. After the update applies, your HomePatrol-1 will stay on the first info screen for about 5 seconds, then move on to the next screen with the power-off options. If you still don't tap the screen, your HomePatrol-1 will power off into the state you set for the default setting.
  • Sometimes, you had to hold down POWER a long time to turn on your HomePatrol-1. This time should be much shorter, after the update.
  • If you were holding on a channel that belonged to a trunked radio system, then tapped the sidebar menu, scanning would resume (you'd lose your channel hold).
  • Finally, the bug most discussed in our forums, if you were holding on a channel, then held also on the department, when you released the hold on the channel, your HomePatrol-1 would jump to a different department. No more workarounds needed, this one is fixed, as well.
It looks like we'll be able to start talking about the next update (which will be a major one) in just a couple of months. Can't give any details, yet, but be sure to watch this space!

NSW Government Radio Network (April 2011 Update 1)

As you all know the NSW Government Radio Network has gone digital! The majority of the 160~ sites are 100% P25 Digital with a few sites still having the old analog control channels alive for a month or so more, but basically the old system as we know it is finished.

The sites are setup into zones, Zone 1 (Sydney and Central Coast), Zone 2 (Western NSW and Newcastle), Zone 3 (ACT, South Coast and Southern Tablelands)

Just like the sites, the talkgroup id's are also setup into zones, 1xxxx belong to Zone 1, 2xxxx belong to Zone 2, and 3xxxx belong to Zone 3, with the exception of some agencies including NSW Fire Rescue. ACT Agencies have talkgroup id's of 4xxxx.

Agencies that use the NSW Government Radio Network that have been heard so far are,
NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW Fire Rescue, NSW State Emergency Service, Ambulance Service of NSW, ChildFlight,  Corrective Services, AusGrid (Energy Australia), Integral Energy, Roads and Traffic Authority, Sydney Ferries, NSW Maritime, Juvenile Justice, Sheriff Department of NSW, Sutherland Shire Council, Railcorp, ABC News, and a few unidentified users. In the ACT, the ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Fire Brigade and ACT Rural Fire Service, ACT SES as well as ACT Parks and Conservation.

At this stage, only a few number of users are using encryption. Those include Corrective Services who are trialing it on talkgroup 10402.

Non-Government P25 Trunking System (Sydney)

A non-government P25 Trunking site located at the ABC Tower (Gore Hill) at Artarmon, run by company Airwave Solutions, they have 5 registered frequencies with ACMA at this site. Airwave Solutions according to their website are running a trial P25 Trunking system to demonstrate to potential customers the capabilities of a P25 Digital Trunking System. Here is an extract from a news article from their website..

Airwave Solutions Australia has unveiled the P25 Solution Centre, an industry initiative with the aim of demonstrating to the Australian market the performance and maturity of the P25 open standard with equipment supplied by multiple vendors.

As a dedicated operator of critical government infrastructure, Airwave understands the importance of choosing the best and most compatible technology for an organisation. It is with this in mind that Airwave partnered with P25 industry equipment manufacturers and suppliers (including Tait Radio Communications, Harris, Auria Wireless, ComGroup Australia, RFI, ICOM and Zetron) to bring the P25 Solution Centre to market.

The P25 Solution Centre provides an environment that allows visitors to test and verify the equipment and applications from multiple vendors, and also confirm the value of the options available in the Australian P25 Communications market. This is made possible for customers through their participation in live demonstrations of equipment from multiple suppliers working together within an integrated environment as specified by the user as well as the ability to configure radios from different manufacturers, to then use on alternative manufacturers infrastructure – again as specified by the user.

GRE PSR-800 decodes X2-TDMA

GRE has confirmed that it's new PSR-800 pre-programmed digital scanner will decode both APCO-25 digital AND X2-TDMA which is an early variation of APCO-25 Phase II TDMA digital. This is very exciting and important news in the scanner world. Currently X2-TDMA is used by select public safety agencies in the Washington D.C. area, particularly in Prince Georges County, MD. Up until now no scanner could decode TDMA. X2-TDMA is not the final spec of APCO-25 Phase II but we believe it will likely be quite some time before the final specifications are announced and equipment is manufactured. Thus the PSR-800 will not be able to decode a future unknown specification. In the meantime though, for people in the DC area and possibly other areas in the future, the PSR-800 for now is the scanner of choice.

OP25 Project

OP25 is a not-for-profit project to bring together folks that are interested in implementing APCO P25 using a software-defined radio. Our goal is to build a software-defined analyzer for APCO P25 signals that is available under the GNU Public License (GPL).

APCO Project 25 is the digital communications standard used by many police and emergency services throughout the world. Most notably the US, Canada and Australia deploy systems based on P25. Compared to existing analogue systems P25 offers improved spectrum use, coverage and flexibility. Provision is made to ensure the confidentiality of traffic, to allow the use of trunking and the provision of data in addition to voice services.

Hardware scanners such as the Uniden BCD996T offer APCO P25 functionality but software-defined radio (SDR) offers significantly improved flexibility. For example, software radio approaches can receive many channels at once, handle both voice and data (including the trunking control channel), decrypt encrypted traffic when the key is known and log traffic to disk for later analysis. With the right software an SDR is a powerful analysis tool for debugging and monitoring of P25 networks.
That's the sales message. The reality is software-defined radio isn't yet as simple as the plug-and-play of hardware radios. You will need a lot of patience and a fair amount of software skills to get working. To get an idea of the work involved you can check out Hardware for Your Software Radio By Stephen Cass. In that sense this really is an amateur radio project and requires the same kind of skill and dedication but we've a few people who will help out if you run into trouble. A project like this needs many different skills so even if you're not technical you maybe able to help in other ways.

A short video that demonstrates OP25 transmitting audio from a PC's microphone input, then to a USRP being received by a GRE scanner is available on  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk0S5JtQtMk

OP25 project can be found here: http://132.234.113.119/op25

MPT1327 Monitoring in Sydney

MPT1327 is a reasonably older system still being used throughout Sydney and some regional areas. The bigger ones being the Vertel VHF and Telstra Fleetcoms UHF networks.  However, most scanners available on the market are unable to track the MPT1327 trunking network on their own like they do with EDACS, LTR and Motorola Trunking systems, but thanks to some developers, there is now an application called 'Trunkview' which 'TrunkView is an MPT1327 protocol decoder, used in a single radio setup without the need for a discriminator output.' allows you to be able to monitor and decode the MPT1327 control channel and be able to follow voice channels with the use of 2 scanners and this application.

Trunkview is available from http://www.linato.net/trunkview/ and works on most Microsoft Windows operating systems, and all is required is a audio cable and/or a RS232 cable.

For a list of available MPT1327 sites, goto http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?tab=trs&stid=157&sort=type however this list may be outdated for certain areas.

Programming your PRO-96/2096 or DTS/DSE96 Digital Scanner

ARC96 supports the Radioshack PRO-96/PRO-2096/DTS-96 models in one single software package

This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to program your scanner for the new P25 GRN system in NSW, all you need is your USB or Serial to PC/IF cable. Also allows you to enter alpha tags much easier then by hand to your talkgroups or PMR channels, as well as by Site name/number on your GRN control channels, or talkgroup's.
